Seafarers and Fisherman's Day celebration at Tyros

Tyros has a maritime tradition of 2,500 years. During the Byzantine times the Tyrians were known for their nautical art, having served on ships of the Byzantine emperors but also on the ships of the great captains of neighboring Spetses and Hydra.

The Tyrians, when the first Greek State was founded, were engaged in maritime trade, transporting products to all the major ports of the Aegean and the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

The locals, however, are also famous fishermen.

From 1960 to 1980, about 400-500 men were active sailors of all disciplines.

Every September or the last days of August, Tyros celebrates the sea, seafarers and fishermen. The celebration is organized by the Peloponnese Region, the Municipality of South Kynouria-Tyros Municipality and the Tyros Fishermen Association. During the celebration, reference is made to the naval tradition of the inhabitants of Tyros, a commemoration of the lost sailors and fishermen, and the respiteers of the sea are honored.
