Architecture

The distinctive Tsakonian architecture is distinguished by the following features: pebble courtyards, painted glass in the windows, carved and painted ceilings, tiled loggias, turrets and cabinets. In Leonidion unique towers (built before 1800) and neoclassical houses of the mid-19th century are preserved with special care.

The mansions are really impressive: paved with pebbled courtyards, with cisterns, stone stairs, tiled roofs, high stone-plastered masonry walls, courtyards and gardens, carved and painted walls testify to the wealth of Prastos, as the town was named in the past and of Leonidion today.

Three of the most magnificent pre-revolutionary monuments of the Peloponnese and ornaments of our architectural heritage are preserved in Leonidion:

1. The Tower of Tsikaliotis

2. The mansion of Precious and Katsikoyannis

3. The Tower of Chatziroudis

There are still about 120 classical mansions built by local and Italian craftsmen between 1840 and 1910, with obvious western influence but also with clear folk elements.
